North Carolina launches Operation Crash Reduction campaign
RALEIGH, NC (WWAY) — North Carolina officials are increasing traffic enforcement through Oct. 18 as part of the annual Operation Crash Reduction campaign.
The statewide effort began Monday and focuses on speeding, seat belt use and distracted driving. The campaign is part of a broader initiative led by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
State officials say October has historically seen a higher number of serious and deadly crashes. North Carolina recorded 144 deadly crashes in October 2025.
During the campaign, law enforcement agencies across the state are expected to increase patrols, use radar enforcement and deploy speed display signs.
The Governor’s Highway Safety Program says speeding and reckless driving remain major concerns. In 2025, North Carolina recorded 1,426 deadly crashes, while law enforcement agencies issued more than 143,000 speeding violations and nearly 24,000 reckless driving violations.
Officials are urging drivers to slow down, avoid distractions and wear seat belts.
NCGHSP Director Mark Ezzell said fall traffic, shorter daylight hours and seasonal events can create added risks on North Carolina roads.
