Novant Health launches virtual headache and migraine clinic for North Carolina patients

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Novant Health is expanding access to specialized care for people experiencing migraines and chronic headaches with the launch of a new virtual headache clinic available to adults across North Carolina.
The new service, called Novant Health Virtual Headache Care, allows patients ages 18 and older to connect with headache specialists through virtual appointments using a smartphone, tablet or computer.
The clinic is designed to provide evaluation, treatment and ongoing care for several headache conditions, including chronic migraines, cluster headaches, tension-type headaches and other complex neurological pain disorders.
Specialized headache treatment from home
According to Novant Health, the virtual clinic offers a range of services, including preventive treatments, symptom-relief therapies, coordination of diagnostic imaging and follow-up care.
The clinic will be staffed by Dr. Susie Platt and Dr. Megan Donnelly, with Platt serving as the lead physician.
“Migraines and chronic headaches can affect nearly every aspect of a person’s life, from their ability to work and care for their family to simply enjoying time with loved ones,” Platt said.
“By offering a virtual option, we’re expanding access to specialized treatment and making it more convenient for patients to receive the remarkable care and support they need to find relief and get back to the things that matter most.”
Expanding access to headache specialists
Novant Health says the new clinic is intended to address gaps in access to specialized headache treatment, particularly for patients who live far from providers.
The health system cited research indicating that more than 90% of U.S. counties do not have a certified headache medicine specialist.
Virtual appointments allow patients to consult with specialists without traveling to an office for each visit.
Novant Health also noted that some people rely on over-the-counter medications for years before seeking specialized treatment.
Patients who experience frequent headaches or symptoms that do not improve with treatment may benefit from an evaluation by a headache specialist, according to Platt.
How to schedule an appointment
Novant Health Virtual Headache Care is available to adults ages 18 and older throughout North Carolina.
Patients can schedule appointments through Novant Health’s MyChart patient portal or its Virtual Care webpage.
The new headache clinic joins several other virtual services offered by Novant Health, including virtual menopause care, men’s health, weight management and primary care.
