Oak Island cancer survivor’s foundation to be featured in a national TV series
OAK ISLAND, NC (WWAY) — An organization inspired by an Oak Island cancer survivor will be featured in a national television series premiering Wednesday.
The Friends of Jaclyn Foundation will appear in the celebrity edition of “The Great American Road Rally,” a 10-episode series premiering Sept. 16 on The CW.
The foundation was inspired by Jaclyn Murphy, an Oak Island resident who was diagnosed with a malignant pediatric brain tumor at age 9. Murphy, now 31, is a cancer survivor.
According to the foundation, Friends of Jaclyn has supported more than 1,300 children with pediatric brain tumors and other childhood cancers since it was founded in 2005.
The organization connects children with sports teams and other groups through its Adopt-A-Child program, with the goal of providing children and their families with ongoing emotional support. It also operates a Guardian Angel program for siblings of children with cancer.
During filming for “The Great American Road Rally,” the foundation traveled along Route 66 from Chicago to Santa Monica, California.
Friends of Jaclyn said it completed 12 adoptions in 10 cities during the trip, pairing children battling cancer with sports teams or community groups.
The television series will feature the foundation’s trip and adoption ceremonies along the route.
A local premiere watch party is planned at Paul’s Cafe on Oak Island.
“The Great American Road Rally” premieres Wednesday, Sept. 16, at 9 p.m. Eastern time on The CW.
