Oak Island police introduce K-9s Sandy and Dune

OAK ISLAND, NC (WWAY) — The Oak Island Police Department has announced the names of two dogs joining its K-9 unit as the department works to reintroduce the program.

The department announced that the new K-9 officers are Sandy, a female chocolate Labrador, and Dune, a male black Labrador.

The names were selected as the dogs prepare to begin working with their assigned handlers and eventually serve the Oak Island community.

Officers Beau Boose and Gary Green, who were selected to serve as the dogs’ handlers, began a five-week live-in training course Monday, Aug. 31.

Police Chief Charlie Morris thanked the officers for taking on the additional responsibility and commitment required of K-9 handlers.

The department said the training is an important step toward getting the K-9 unit operational.

Oak Island police have been documenting the process of selecting, training and preparing the dogs and their handlers for deployment.

The department said additional updates will be shared as the K-9 program progresses.
