Oak Island shark attack survivor gets early Christmas gift

OAK ISLAND, NC (WWAY) — One of the two victims to lose a limb in an Oak Island shark attack over the summer reached a big milestone just in time for Christmas.

12-year-old Kiersten Yow lost an arm and suffered injuries to her leg in the attack on June 14.

Yow’s parents have been posting updates on her recovery to a Facebook support page since the attack happened, and this week they announced big news; Yow now has a prosthetic hand.

According to the page, Yow had her final fitting for the prosthetic earlier this month, and is now giving her family the “thumbs up.”

Yow was one of two people bitten by a shark in Oak Island on the same day. 16-year-old Hunter Treschl had his arm amputated after a shark attacked him.
