OIB man talks about record-setting sailing trip

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Tonight in Ocean Isle Beach, native son Reid Stowe will share the story of his record-setting voyage that took him around the world in a sailboat he built by hand.

Stowe says over the course of 1,152 days he went through a series of trials and tribulations that changed his life.

During his voyage Stowe caught fish for food and collected rainwater to drink. He also was close to disaster multiple times, including when he collided with another ship and when a rogue wave nearly sank his sailboat.

But he says ultimately this voyage was about more than a world record.

“By going to sea I could experience a oneness with the ocean and a oneness with mankind and nature and the universe, and that was what I felt in such a strong way. That’s what gave me the power to do it and the strength to keep going,” Stowe said.

Stowe says the trip challenged both his physical and mental character and at times it was nearly impossible for him to pilot the ship day and night facing upwards of 31,000 waves a day.

If you want to meet stowe and hear his story, Head to the Museum of Coastal Carolina on East 2nd St. in Ocean Isle Beach. He’s speaking there from 6 until 7 p.m.
