Onslow County fire contained, evacuation lifted in Sneads Ferry

ONSLOW COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Onslow County Emergency Services says residents are being allowed to return home, after an Onlsow County fire forced them to evacuate this afternoon.

Emergency Services Director Norman Bryson says homes were evacuated in the area of Old Folkstone Road within a quarter mile of the intersection of Highway 17.

Evacuees were sent to the Sneads Ferry Branch Library on Highway 210.

The woods fire began at around 3:00 p.m.

The fire caused Highway 17 to shut down in all directions from Old Folkstone Road to the Town of Holly Ridge, but now all roads are open.

Firefighters from Pender County are providing mutual aid.

Onslow County Fire Marshal Brian Kelly says crews are still working the fire but it is contained.

This is only the latest in a series of fires affecting the Cape Fear area.
