Overpass coming to MLK-Market intersection

WILMINGTON (StarNews) — Work on a long-planned major overhaul to one of the city’s most congested intersections could start this year.

Chad Kimes, deputy division engineer with the local N.C. Department of Transportation division, told Wilmington officials Monday that the agency has officially thrown its support behind building an overpass at Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway/Eastwood Road and Market Street.

The design, which received the largest support from the public at a meeting December, would see the heavily-trafficked intersection become a single-point urban interchange (SPUI) that would elevate MLK Parkway/Eastwood over Market to allow for nonstop movement.
