PAID PARKING: It will now cost you to visit Surf City
SURF CITY, NC (WWAY) — Starting this spring, you will have to pay to park in Surf City.
“We ended up with 3 dollars an hour and 20 dollars a day, as far as charges for paid parking,” Surf City Mayor Doug Medlin said.
Despite the added expense, Medlin assures visitors there will still be plenty of free parking time, too.
“Before 9 o’clock, there’s no charge,” Medlin added. “And after 5 o’clock in the afternoon there’s no charge. So if you wanna come down, go dine out, you can park anywhere you want to and there won’t be any charge for parking.”
Medlin says he has heard from numerous people around the area, who have provided their thoughts on paid parking.
“We’ve had some response from people that don’t like it,” Medlin said. “But we have had more response from people that agree that we need it. And of course the reason they’re looking at that we need it so much is the additional income that we will get for the beach nourishment project.”
Medlin feels the project is very important for their beaches, which have been subject to severe erosion over the years.
He says the parking fees will go a long way in helping cover the costs of the work, and wants everyone to know the parking plan has been well thought out.
“The company that we’ve got doing it is very professional and is doing it in several other places right local here, as well as South Carolina and Virginia,” Medlin stated. “But they know what they’re doing, so they know how to run that parking.”
Paid parking will be enforced from April 1 to October 30.
There will be an additional option for seasonal passes, with a 10% discount given to active or retired military, senior citizens, and residents living within the Extra Territorial Jurisdiction. Additionally, free parking for town residents will be incorporated and validated through the online portal system.
Surf City joins Kure Beach who also recently added paid parking.
