Partially collapsed pier in Atlantic Beach
ATLANTIC BEACH (WTVD) — Daybreak has revealed plenty of damage from Hurricane Irene so far, and it’s not just confined to the Cape Fear Region.
The far end of a fishing pier in Atlantic Beach has succumbed to the heavy surf.
The structure is still standing, and extends for about 100 feet, but the end has disappeared into the ocean.
The storm surge has pushed waves all the way up to property lines, but at this point, the dunes are still protecting the island from the rushing ocean water.
