Pembroke to hold 1st New Year’s Eve Pine Cone Drop

PEMBROKE, NC (AP) — The town of Pembroke will celebrate the end of 2013 with the help of a nearly 400-pound pine cone.

The Fayetteville Observer reported the town is holding its first New Year’s Eve Pine Cone Crop at the Pembroke Recreational Complex.

Richard Lowry, owner of Lowry Plumbing Co., and members of the Pembroke Fire Department tested the 6-foot-tall pine cone Monday afternoon by attaching it to the bucket of an engine and raising it.

The pine cone is made of handcrafted sheet metal leaves that range from dark to light in color. A team of welders and fabricators who work with Lowry created the pine cone. Lowry says the material and labor were donated.
