BURGAW, NC (WWAY) — As hurricane season gets underway, residents will have an opportunity to learn how to better prepare for emergencies at the 2026 Pender County Disaster Preparedness Expo.

Hosted by the Pender Long Term Recovery Group (PLTRG) in partnership with local agencies, nonprofit organizations and emergency management partners, the free event will take place Saturday, June 6, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Burgaw Middle School Gymnasium.

The annual expo is designed to provide residents with resources, information and connections to organizations that assist with disaster preparedness, response and recovery efforts throughout Pender County.

This year’s theme, “Rebuilding Together,” highlights the importance of community resilience and proactive planning before disasters strike.

Attendees will be able to access disaster preparedness literature, family emergency planning guides and information about recovery resources available after storms and other emergencies. Residents can also sign up for emergency alerts and notifications, learn about the county’s Special Needs Registry and view examples of emergency supply kit essentials.

In addition, representatives from local agencies and community organizations will be on hand to answer questions and share information about services available before, during and after disasters.

“The best time to prepare for a disaster is before one happens,” said Olivia Dawson, mayor of Burgaw and co-chair of the Pender County Long Term Recovery Group. “This annual expo provides residents with information, resources, and connections that can help protect their families, homes, and businesses when emergencies arise. Prepared communities recover faster and stronger.”

The Pender County Long Term Recovery Group works to coordinate resources and recovery services for individuals and families affected by disasters. Through partnerships with local organizations and agencies, the group focuses on strengthening community resilience and supporting long-term recovery efforts across the county.
