Pender County family open hearts and sunflower field in support of Ukrainians

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) – A Pender County family has opened their hearts, and field of sunflowers, to help support Ukrainians.

Dean and Susan Lanier own Old River Farm, the couple wanted to especially help Ukrainian farmers, teachers, and children in need.

They opened up their sunflower field to the public for a creative way to raise money.

The two-week fundraiser gave people an opportunity to take pictures, for a small fee, while the flowers were in bloom.

To the Laniers’ surprise, the fundraiser not only raised funds for a Ukrainian family but prompted nearby communities to get involved.

“There were people that would buy a flower and give us $200, those are the kinds of gifts we got during those two weeks,” said Susan

“Our friends at Saltbox Church in Wilmington, they joined in our effort,” said Dean. “So if our small effort inspired someone to do something in their own way, then that’s great.”

The couple learned of others through a organization called Ukrainians in the Carolinas and was matched with a farm family in need of support.

The Lanier’s raised more than $8,000 and thanked the community’s support for raising the money.

“It was the community, we couldn’t have done it without everyone’s support and generosity,” said Susan.
