PENDER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Pender County Schools has received a $10,000 grant from No Kid Hungry to help strengthen its Summer Meals program.

Representatives from the Carolina Hunger Initiative recently visited a Summer Meals distribution site at Malpass Corner Elementary. Staff demonstrated how they prepare and distribute seven days’ worth of breakfast and lunch meals for children across Pender County.

The grant will be used to purchase a refrigerator/freezer trailer, providing additional cold-storage and transportation capacity for the district’s Child Nutrition department.

District officials said the trailer will help staff safely store and transport food while supporting meal distribution at multiple locations throughout Pender County.

Pender County Schools said the Summer Meals program serves thousands of meals each week and thanked No Kid Hungry, the Carolina Hunger Initiative, Child Nutrition employees and community partners for supporting the program.
