Pet pals: Labrador Retriever Mix puppy seeking home

Winnabow, NC (WWAY) — A 6-month-old puppy named Eagle is looking for a home as Paws Place Dog Rescue prepares to move forward with construction of a storm shelter at its Brunswick County property.

Lee Van Ormer with Paws Place introduced Eagle to WWAY on Tuesday.

Eagle is a Labrador retriever mix that may also be mixed with pit bull. Van Ormer said Eagle arrived at Paws Place from Rocky Mount in July with his siblings, which were all given bird-themed names.

Van Ormer described Eagle as initially nervous around new people before becoming playful and affectionate. She said he is treat-motivated, walks well on a leash and rides well in a car.

“He’s super playful, loves all people, loves to give kisses, loves to hug,” Van Ormer said.

Eagle weighs about 26 pounds and is expected to continue growing. Van Ormer estimated he could eventually weigh around 50 pounds and said a potential adopter should be prepared to spend time training a puppy.

Eagle has been neutered and is up to date on his vaccinations, according to Van Ormer. Two of his brothers, Falcon and Raptor, are also available for adoption.

Paws Place is also moving forward with plans for a storm shelter on its 17-acre property after receiving a building permit from Brunswick County.

Van Ormer said the organization has been working on the project for about a year and a half. The planned shelter will include a second-story area where dogs can be moved during hurricanes or flooding instead of being transported off-site.

Paws Place expects to break ground on the project soon.

The organization is working toward a fundraising goal of approximately $315,000 for the project. Van Ormer said about $292,000 had been raised as of Monday.
