Pineville officer dies in motorcycle crash near the battleship


BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A Pineville police officer died early Saturday morning at New Hanover Regional Medical Center after crashing his motorcycle Friday.

According to the NC Highway Patrol, Michael Stephen Williams, 56, of Waxhaw, was riding a Harley Davidson when the crash happened.

Troopers say it happened just before 5:30 p.m. on US 74 toward Wilmington when Ofc. Williams lost control on the US 421 ramp.

Williams ran off the roadway in the curve and struck the guardrail.

Williams was thrown from the motorcycle.

Troopers say Williams was wearing a helmet and no impairment or high speed is suspected.

Emergency crews took Williams to NHRMC. He died at 1:00 a.m. on Saturday.

No one else was on the motorcycle and no other cars were involved.

According to a post on the Pineville Police Department’s Facebook page, Williams worked as a full-time officer for 15 years.

He was recently working with the department as a reserve officer.
