UPDATE: Police identify man in custody after active shooter situation


CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Police have identified the man in custody after an active shooter was reported in Carolina Beach.

According to an e-mail from the town, law enforcement officers responded to the 1600 block of Sea Ray Lane for a call of shots fired. Carolina Beach Police Chief Chris Spivey said that when officers arrives, more shots were fired from what seemed to be a rifle. Crews quickly blocked traffic and got neighbors out of the way.

Spivey said the suspected shooter, now identified as Thomas Henry Coulson, 21, fired at officers, hitting one of the Carolina Beach Police officer’s equipment and uniform. He said the suspected firearm was recovered.

The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office, FBI, ATF, Wilmington Police Department, NC State Highway Patrol, NC DMV, NC State Parks and Ft. Fisher Police all responded.

According to the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office, at this point, there are no known injuries to citizens or law enforcement.

Carolina Beach Elementary School was locked down, though the school had already released for the day. According to tweets from New Hanover County Schools, Bus 299 from the school were rerouted to Anderson Elementary, where parents could pick up students. Buses from Murray Middle School and Ashley High School that were headed to Carolina Beach were held at the schools during the investigation.

Spivey said criminal charges are pending further investigation.
