WILMINGTON, N.C. — Drivers traveling through downtown Wilmington should expect temporary road and sidewalk closures next week as city crews perform tree maintenance near the courthouse and Innes Park.

The City of Wilmington announced that the 300 block of Princess Street will be closed to traffic daily from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. from June 22 through June 25.

No parking will be allowed on the block during work hours. Sidewalks surrounding the courthouse and along Innes Park will also be closed during the project.

According to the city, urban forestry crews will remove several declining sawtooth oak trees and prune other trees in Innes Park. Officials say the work is intended to improve pedestrian access and make routine maintenance safer and more efficient.

The city said trees removed during the project will be replaced with species better suited to the site’s conditions.

Officials are encouraging motorists and pedestrians to plan ahead and use alternate routes during the closures.

More information about the city’s urban tree maintenance program is available through the City of Wilmington.
