Progress Energy: Residents near nuclear plant not in danger
BRUNSWICK COUNTY — Progress Energy says people living near the Brunswick Nuclear Plant are not in danger after discovering a potentially toxic chemical near the plant.
The substance is called tritium, a chemical by-product of nuclear reactors.
According to the EPA, long-term exposure to large amounts can cause cancer.
Progress Energy assures residents that the levels found were small and do not pose a health risk.
The company will hold public information session Tuesday.
They will have geologists and other experts on hand to talk with nearby residents.
