‘Protest with purpose’: Wilmington protesters form non-profit for community outreach

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Protesters toted signs and chanted George Floyd’s last words on the steps of City Hall in Downtown Wilmington on Sunday evening.

Lily Nicole, a leader who emerged during the protests, says the group has a permit to protest until June 6, 2021 and it will be renewed if necessary.

From the beginning, the protesters said their mission was to protest with purpose.

A purpose to create change and educate the community.

Beginning Monday, from 12pm-4pm there will be speakers coming to the steps of City Hall to speak to the group about various subjects.

Lily Nicole says they hope for community members and leaders to come and educate the crowd.

If a speaker would like to speak to the group but is taking extra COVID-19 precautions, contact the group and a ZOOM can be set up with their projector.

By the end of the week, Lowercase Leaders will become a 501(c)(3) non-profit focused on community outreach and education.

Lily Nicole says their main three focuses at this time are creating a community garden, a community breakfast, and community policing.

The group is working on obtaining a building to create classrooms and a place where the community can gather to learn together.
