Publix recalls GreenWise frozen berries over possible E. coli
LAKELAND, FL (WWAY) — Publix is recalling all lots of several GreenWise frozen berry products because of possible E. coli contamination.
The recall includes GreenWise Organic Whole Blueberries and GreenWise Organic Whole Mixed Berries sold at Publix stores in eight states, including North Carolina and South Carolina.
Publix said the products may be contaminated with Escherichia coli O145:H28, a Shiga toxin-producing strain of E. coli that can cause severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, which may be bloody, and vomiting.
Most healthy people recover within a week, but some infections can lead to hemolytic uremic syndrome, a serious complication that can be particularly dangerous for young children, older adults and people with weakened immune systems.
Publix said it stopped sales of the affected frozen products at the end of June. The products remain unavailable for sale.
The recall covers the following products:
- GreenWise Organic Whole Blueberries, 10-ounce, UPC 41415-06453
- GreenWise Organic Whole Blueberries, 48-ounce, UPC 41415-12053
- GreenWise Organic Whole Mixed Berries, 10-ounce, UPC 41415-06753
- GreenWise Organic Whole Mixed Berries, 48-ounce, UPC 41415-12153
A recall involving one 10-ounce lot of GreenWise Organic Blueberries was previously announced July 3 by Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A. of San Carlos, Chile.
Publix said it expanded the recall to all lots of the affected blueberry and mixed berry products following product traceback and epidemiological information from public health officials.
Customers should not eat the recalled berries. The products should be thrown away or returned to Publix for a full refund.
