Relay from Raleigh kicks off Race for the Cure in Wilmington

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wilmington kicked off this weekend’s Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure today as a team of survivors, runners and co-survivors arrived after a relay from Raleigh.

One participant’s interest in Komen started when she lost a loved one to breast cancer. The 132-mile relay, which started yesterday, gave her the opportunity to run in honor and memory of her aunt.

“We did it for the cause of breast cancer,” Whitney Wiggins said. “Women are facing challenges every day. The race was a challenge, but it’s nothing compared to not being able to get screened or losing your mother or your sister or aunt to breast cancer.”

More than 2000 people have already signed up for tomorrow’s race. It starts at 8:30 a.m. with the start and finish lines on 2nd Street between Princess and Dock streets.
