Residents of Old Wilmington donate sculpture to city

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The City of Wilmington received the gift of art today. A giant sculpture of two venus flytraps by local artist Paul Hill was dedicated along the riverfront.

The sculpture was originally in front of the downtown post office as part of a series of public artwork. The Residents of Old Wilmington raised money to purchase the metal and glass sculpture. They had it permanently placed downtown on market and water streets.

“We all fell in love with the sculpture,” said Sherry Demas, Residents of Old Wilmington Mayor. “It was in front of the post office, and every time we went downtown we saw it. So we said, ‘We need to buy that and give it to the City of Wilmington.’ The membership voted to do so, and we paid $9,000 dollars for the sculpture.”

Flytraps are indigenous to the area, and the sculpture is titled “Southern Hospitality”

Residents of Old Wilmington say they hope to do similar projects for Wilmington in the near future.
