Reunion seeks retired lifeguards to help honor lost loved ones

WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Wrightsville Beach Ocean Rescue is teaming up with Wrightsville Beach Lifeguards to bring retired, current, and junior guards together. But they need your help finding those who served.

The old school reunion is happening this Saturday at the Wrightsville Beach Museum of History. They will also dedicate a guard stand honoring fellow lifeguards who have passed away.

“So we replaced all the lifeguard stands last year and this is one of the older stands that was refurbished for the dedication,” Wrightsville Beach Ocean Rescue Captain, Jeremy Owens said. “And what we’re trying to do is put the names of lifeguards, you know, that have passed away on this stand so it’ll be kind of a remembrance of those past lifeguards.”

All lifeguards past and present along with community members are asked to attend. Organizers hope this will be the largest gathering of guards since their last reunion in 2009.

“So it’s just going to be real special to get together, share stories, share rescues, and you know, just kind of talk about ocean rescue at Wrightsville Beach spanning back for you know nearly half a decade,” Owens said.
