Officials identify White Lake drowning victim

WHITE LAKE, NC (WWAY/WTVD) – Officials tell WWAY that crews with the NC Wildlife Resources Commission and local authorities have located a man reportedly missing in White Lake.

The body of a 57-year-old man who went missing around 11 a.m. near Goldston Pier has been recovered, authorities said.

Wildlife resource commission officials   identified the man to be John J. Godwin of Benson.

White Lake officials were searching for Godwin in the water near the end of the pier for about three hours.

Multiple boats and dive teams were also involved in the search.

With the use of sonar, officials were able to locate the body in an area of water not far from the pier that was about 7 feet deep.

Bladen County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Larry Guyton says a call came in to 911 around noon by a woman saying her husband was swimming around Goldston’s Beach on White Lake and she could not locate him. Guyton went on to say that’s when water rescue crews as well as White Lake Police responded to search for the man.

We have reached out to police for an update on the recovery efforts and will bring you that information when we hear more.
