SeaWitch to host farewell celebration for Carolina Beach’s ‘Record Weekend’ mural
CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) — A Carolina Beach mural celebrating the community’s connection to live music is getting a farewell celebration before upcoming construction prevents its wall from being preserved.
SeaWitch Tiki Bar will host a free community event Wednesday, Sept. 30, from 6 to 9 p.m. honoring “Record Weekend,” the fourth mural created through the Carolina Beach Mural Project.
The mural was created by Charlotte-based artist Sharon Dowell and has become part of the artwork featured at SeaWitch. Organizers say it reflects the role live music plays at the venue and in Carolina Beach.
According to the Carolina Beach Mural Project, the wall featuring the artwork cannot be preserved during SeaWitch’s upcoming construction.
The farewell event will give people an opportunity to see the mural before it is lost and learn more about the artist and its history.
The Crystal Fussell Duo will perform live from 6 to 9 p.m. Organizers said the duo was selected because of its history performing at SeaWitch.
Carolina Beach Mural Project merchandise will also be available, including a limited number of numbered giclée prints of Dowell’s mural.
“This isn’t just a farewell to a wall,” said Andrea J. Cannistraci, marketing and public relations lead for the Carolina Beach Mural Project. “It’s a celebration of the art, the artist, the music and the community that made this mural part of the Carolina Beach experience.”
SeaWitch also plans to make a donation to the nonprofit Carolina Beach Mural Project and preserve the memory of “Record Weekend” at its new location through photographic artwork.
Organizers said SeaWitch also hopes to work with Dowell on another mural in the future, with space being set aside for artwork.
The Carolina Beach Mural Project is a nonprofit organization that uses public art to highlight the town’s history and culture. The organization says it has installed 21 murals throughout Carolina Beach.
