Security guard injured during altercation at Landfall fireworks show

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY)– The Wilmington Police Department is investigating a disturbance that broke out Friday night during the Independence Day fireworks celebration at the Country Club of Landfall.

According to witnesses, several young adults who were not believed to be members of the community were seen running and riding bicycles toward the back of the crowd before an altercation erupted near Hole 1 on the golf course.

Witnesses said the dispute quickly escalated into a physical fight. During the incident, a security guard identified as Russell James attempted to intervene and was punched in the eye. Photos reviewed by our newsroom show the employee suffered visible facial injuries.

One Landfall resident, who asked not to be identified, said the disturbance unfolded as people were gathered with their families to watch the fireworks.

“It was actually going through some of these families that had blankets on the ground, and they were just trampling through these people. It was kind of crazy. I didn’t expect something like that at the Landfall fireworks display.”

In a statement sent to residents, the Country Club of Landfall said it is cooperating with investigators.

“We are conducting a full internal investigation and working with law enforcement authorities to identify the perpetrators and will pursue justice to the fullest extent possible.”
