Seen a lot of smoke lately? Experts explain importance of controlled burns
PENDER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Have you seen a lot of smoke around the Cape Fear lately?
The Coastal Fire and Restoration for Nature Conservancy is lighting controlled burns in Pender County to clear up under brush in our forests, which can cause a lot of problems because experts say it feeds a wildfire.
Director Angie Carl says these burns serve a number of purposes.
“It’s a safety thing for the area and it’s also a benefit for the wildlife,” Carl said. “It allows sunlight to get to the floor. It’s the only way we can get Venus fly traps to grow and all of our 21 different species of carnivorous plants.”
Carl says these burns are all about minimizing risk.
