NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Residents looking to securely dispose of sensitive personal documents will have multiple opportunities this June as the New Hanover County Senior Resource Center partners with New Hanover County Recycling and Solid Waste to host a series of free Shred-A-Thon events across the county.

In total, five drive-thru shredding events will be held throughout June, offering residents a safe and convenient way to destroy documents containing personal or financial information. Each vehicle is limited to two boxes of materials.

“We are excited to be able to offer more opportunities for people to safely dispose of confidential and sensitive paperwork, preventing personal information from being used fraudulently,” said Senior Resource Center Director Amber Smith. “The first week of June is Medicare Fraud Prevention Week (June 1–5), so these events are a way to extend assistance to our community, making sure personal information doesn’t fall into the wrong hands.”

Residents are encouraged to bring documents such as bank statements, medical records, credit card offers, and other paperwork containing personal information.

In addition to shredding services, the shred truck will follow select HazWagon schedules, allowing residents to also dispose of household hazardous waste, including paint, chemicals, liquids, and electronics that should not be placed in landfills. However, officials note the HazWagon will not be present at the City of Wilmington’s Keys to Homeownership Expo.

The scheduled Shred-A-Thon events include:

  • Saturday, June 6, 10 a.m.–2 p.m. at Kure Beach Town Hall (117 Settlers Lane)
  • Monday, June 8, 10 a.m.–2 p.m. at Ogden Park (615 Ogden Park Drive)
  • Friday, June 12, 10 a.m.–2 p.m. at Carolina Beach’s Mike Chappell Park (501 Dow Rd S.)
  • Saturday, June 13, 11 a.m.–1 p.m. at the Keys to Homeownership Expo, MLK Center (401 S. 8th Street)
  • Monday, June 15, 10 a.m.–2 p.m. at Ogden Park
