Several people hurt in string of afternoon crashes

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — It was a busy afternoon for law enforcement in Wilmington and New Hanover County dealing with several injury accidents. One near downtown Wilmington sent two children to the hospital.

Just after 3 p.m., police were called to the intersection of 10th and Dawson streets. Wilmington Police tell us a car hit two children, 10 or 11 years old, who were riding motorized mini-bikes after the kids apparently ran a red light. Neither child was wearing a helmet. Both were taken to new hanover regional medical center. No word yet on their injuries.

Meanwhile, crews were on the scene of two separate accidents just miles apart in New Hanover County.

The first was at the intersection of Carolina Beach and Golden Roads.One man involved in the accident tells us a SUV ran the red light and hit a car turning right out of Golden. The SUV was then pushed into the other direction of traffic, where it hit a truck head on. All of the drivers and some passengers were taken to the hospital.

Just as crews were cleaning up that accident, there was another on River Road. The driver of the truck involved says as he came around a curve, a van was making a U-turn in the road and he could not stop in time, hit the side of the van. He was not hurt. The driver of the van was taken to the hospital to be checked out.
