Suspect in custody after Elizabethtown murder

ELIZABETHTOWN, NC (WWAY) — A man is in custody after an apparent murder this morning in Bladen County.

Elizabethtown Interim Police Chief Kip Hester says Jonathon Bruce Parker, 44, is charged with first-degree homicide.

Hester said officers responded to a domestic assault call at 2005 W. Broad Street just after 10 a.m. When they got there they found a white man in his 70s unconscious. Hester said the man had been beaten and had several lacerations. Hester said Parker lived in the house with the victim, but he would not release the name of the victim yet or discuss the relationship between the two men.

A witness told officers the suspect walked away toward woods across from the house. A search, including K-9s, a helicopter and help from other agencies, led to lockdown at Elizabethtown Christian Academy nearby. Officers found Parker around 11:30 a.m. in woods about a mile from his home.

Crime scene tape still circled the home where the murder happened this afternoon.

Hester says Parker is in custody without bond. He says his department is working with the DA’s Office and the SBI as the investigation continues.
