Smithfield, Food Lion donate to Food Bank

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Two North Carolina companies are giving back to the needy in the state.

Smithfield and Food Lion donated 80,000 pounds of protein to the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina. It will ultimately provide more than 300,000 meals to families in our area.

The joint effort is part of Smithfield’s “Helping Hungry Homes” program.

“We decided that turning these donations into a media event, maybe other people will give, people will volunteer or start a food drive,” Smithfield’s Dennis Pittman said. “So this is about raising awareness about homeless and helping hungry people.”
