Soldier honored for actions in Afghanistan

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — As we near Veteran’s Day, one vet, retired Captain Florent Groberg, will be honored next week with the Medal of Honor.

His proud parents Larry and Klara live in Brunswick County and tell us they’ll head to DC on Tuesday to watch this historic moment.

During Captain Groberg’s second deployment to Afghanistan in 2012, he encountered a suicide bomber. 16 soldiers were hurt, four were killed, but because of his bravery, dozens were saved. He was also severely hurt, losing 50 percent of his left calf muscle and suffered a brain injury.

The Army captain was born in France and became a naturalized US citizen in 2001.
