SURF CITY, NC (WWAY) — South Shore Drive remains closed in Surf City as crews work to stabilize a home damaged in a fire Saturday night.

The fire happened around 11:00 p.m. in the 2300 block of South Shore Drive. Town officials said the building is unstable and could collapse, making it unsafe to reopen the road.

A specialized contractor is expected to arrive Monday to help secure the structure. That work could include partially demolishing the home to make the area safe and protect the roadway.

Surf City crews will remain at the scene while the work is underway. Once the building has been stabilized and officials determine the area is safe, South Shore Drive will reopen. Until then, a detour remains in place, and drivers should expect delays if they’re traveling through the area.

One firefighter was taken to a medical facility to be checked out during the initial response. Town officials said the firefighter has since been released and returned to work.

No one else was hurt.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
