Southport man charged with assault by strangulation in Brunswick County

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A Southport man is facing felony assault by strangulation and misdemeanor domestic violence charges following an alleged incident in Brunswick County.

Michael Ray Desjean, 44, is charged with assault by strangulation and misdemeanor crime of domestic violence, according to court records.

A warrant alleges the incident happened Sept. 13 and involved Desjean’s wife.

According to the charging document, Desjean is accused of placing both hands around his wife’s throat and choking her. The warrant alleges he picked her up by her throat and moved her across the room while continuing to hold her throat.

The warrant states the alleged victim suffered redness around her neck.

The Boiling Spring Lakes Police Department is listed as the law enforcement agency on the warrant.

Records show Desjean was booked into custody in New Hanover County on Sept. 21. The assault by strangulation charge carried a $25,000 surety bond, while detention records listed the domestic violence charge without a monetary bond.

The records provided show Desjean was released from custody Wednesday, Sept. 23.
