NCDEQ: Fish kill ‘doesn’t appear’ connected to water treatment
WHITE LAKE, NC (WWAY) — The town of White Lake has received approval from the North Carolina Division of Environmental Quality to resume chemical treatments to the lake.
On Monday, state officials told the town and contractor, HAB Aquatic Solutions, to stop the treatments. Mayor Goldston Womble says the treatments resumed Thursday afternoon.
After reviewing samples from the lake, the state said it did not appear that the fish kills were due to the alum treatments, but could be the result of an ongoing algal bloom.
The treatments are supposed to be a short term fix and the town is working with the Bald Head Island Conservancy towards a long term solution to get rid of the algae.
