Open council spot leads to heated town meeting


SUNSET BEACH, NC (WWAY) — The Sunset Beach Town Council met for a work session today, but this was a town meeting unlike most others.

The public comment portion was very passionate as folks spoke out about the councils proposition to appoint Councilman Mike Williams to an open seat created by Terry Johnson’s resignation from council.

In this month’s election, Williams, along with Wilson Sherrill, were voted out of office.

Some folks said today that due to low voter turnouts, the election results were not necessarily the will of the people, and agreed with the idea to appoint Williams back to council. Many others however felt that Williams had been voted out for a reason, and do not want him to represent the residents of the town any longer.

In a 3-2 vote, council decided to accept applications through January 1 of next year. They also decided to discus procedure for situations such as this at the next meeting, scheduled for December 14.
