WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Restoration work on one of downtown Wilmington’s most recognizable landmarks is taking longer than expected due to issues with a stone supplier.

Work resumed in March on the historic Kenan Fountain, located at the intersection of Market Street and Fifth Avenue, after the structure was damaged several years ago by a contractor working for the North Carolina Department of Transportation.

At the time, officials anticipated the restoration project would be completed by the end of April.

However, construction barriers still surround the fountain in June, prompting questions from residents and visitors about the project’s status.

According to a spokesperson for the City of Wilmington, the delay is tied to issues involving the stone supplier needed to complete the restoration.

No updated completion date has been announced.

The Kenan Fountain is a prominent landmark at the gateway to downtown Wilmington and has remained out of service since it was damaged during nearby road work.
