Tammy Covil discusses plans to run, Facebook posts

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Tammy Covil announced Monday her plans to run for General Assembly, and today she discussed those plans.

Covil is currently a New Hanover County School Board Member. She is up for re-election next year, but plans to run for the state House instead.

She believes her experience and background in education are needed in the General Assembly.

“I saw that as an opportunity to bring some knowledge and experience about those education issues that I had concerns about to raleigh,” said Covil.

Earlier this year Covil made headlines for some controversial Facebook posts in which she called homosexuality a “perverse” lifestyle.

She believes the comments sparked a discussion that needed to be had.

“I’m not, certainly not one to back down from you know a discussion or a debate about issues,” said Covil. “Was that the most productive debate?  Maybe, maybe not.”

Covil does not think those comments will have a negative influence on her campaign for the House.
