(WWAY) — Taylor Farms de Mexico is voluntarily recalling all iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico that was distributed to the U.S. market because it may be contaminated with Cyclospora, a parasite that can cause intestinal illness.

The recall follows a multistate Cyclospora outbreak under investigation by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

According to the company, the affected shredded iceberg lettuce was distributed between June 29 and July 16 to customers in 28 states, including North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Florida, Georgia and Alabama.

Taylor Farms said it has stopped receiving product from the implicated lot, suspended distribution of iceberg lettuce from central Mexico, notified customers and is working with the FDA, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and state health officials.

Cyclospora infection commonly causes diarrhea and frequent bowel movements. Other symptoms may include loss of appetite, weight loss, stomach cramps, bloating, increased gas, nausea and fatigue. Some people may also experience vomiting, body aches, headaches or fever, while others may have no symptoms.

If left untreated, the illness can lead to dehydration and other complications that may require medical care. Symptoms can last from several days to more than a month and may return after initially improving. People with weakened immune systems may experience more severe or prolonged illness.

Anyone who believes they may have consumed the recalled product and develops symptoms should contact a health care provider.
