Teacher pay plan raises questions

LELAND, NC (WWAY)– The governor announced his plan for teacher pay raises at North Carolina A&T university this morning.

Teachers we talked to say they’re happy with any raise, of course, but the concern is about their long term plans.

For Lori Johnson the appreciation she gets from her students at Lincoln Elementary goes a long way.

“Those are the things we call paychecks, that don’t come in an envelope,” Johnson said, “and I’ve had plenty of those.” Sadly, those don’t pay her bills.

“It is very frustrating when you feel like you’re not being appreciated for what you do, and there’s so many pieces to what we do that are unseen and unheard of to the public,” said Johnson.

Which is why there was such a push to raise teacher pay. Not just new teachers either but all of them.

At a press conference Wednesday at North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro, Gov. Pat McCrory announced major education initiatives that will include more money for teachers and state employees.

During the presser, McCrory introduced the “Career Pathways for Teachers” framework, which comes as a follow up to an announcement he made in February that he would work to increase the base pay for North Carolina teachers to $35,000.

Some though hoping the raises being put forward are only the beginning.

“I think as teachers we’re looking for the compensation for the work that we do,” said Settle Dawkins, adding
that Mccrory’s step was just that. As a third grade teacher he’s hoping for more.

“We’d be happier if there was a long term plan laid out at the beginning for what the future holds for the pay that we will receive,” said Dawkins.

For Johnson her 18 years of teaching has never been about the money.

“That’s why I’m here, I’m here for the students,” Johnson said.

If it’s their future hanging in the balance though she thinks the answer is deceptively simple.

“You want the best from your students so you want the best teachers. You get what you pay for,” she said.
