Teen indicted for involuntary manslaughter in crash that killed passenger

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A Brunswick County grand jury has indicted a teen in connection to a car crash that killed a 13-year-old boy last month.

The grand jury indicted Devin Keither Harris, 18, of Calabash, on one count of involuntary manslaughter. A grand jury had previously indicted him on charges of misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, reckless driving, speeding, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and no operator’s license.

Harris is charged in connection with a wreck that killed Caleb Smith in the early morning hours of Feb. 10 on Bridgers Road in Shallotte.

“We have carefully considered the facts of the investigation, the accident reconstruction, and have elected to purse felony charges,” District Attorney Jon David said in a news release. “The grand jury has returned an indictment of involuntary manslaughter and the case will now be handled in Superior Court.”

Harris’s next court date is scheduled for April 5 in Brunswick County Superior Court.
