Teen found guilty of first-degree murder

BRUNSWICK COUNTY — A Brunswick County teenager will spend the rest of his life in prison.

Friday morning a jury found 18-year-old Antwan Ash guilty of first-degree murder.

Ash was only 16 years old when he murdered Kendrick Sparrow.

The prosecutor says the most damning piece of evidence against Ash was a confession taped three days after the killing.

In an interview with a Brunswick County deputy Ash tells how he shot Kendrick Sparrow nine times during a drug deal and then rolled Sparrow’s car into a creek off Makatoka Road near Supply.

Ash’s aunt has a message for other teens who may be headed down the same road as her nephew.

“Please stay to yourself, find something positive to get involved with because it takes a bigger person to stay out of trouble than it does to get in trouble.”

Ash says he acted alone. His family members say Kevin Brown had a hand in Sparrow’s death.

Brown was originally charged with murder as well, but those charges have been dropped because of Ash’s confession.

Brown is, however, charged with accessory after the fact for allegedly helping Ash hide the murder weapon.

Because Ash was 16 when he murdered sparrow he was not eligible for the death penalty.
