Temporary road closures as Wilmington installs speed humps on Burnett Boulevard

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Drivers in Wilmington should expect temporary traffic changes and detours as city crews begin a speed hump installation project on Burnett Boulevard.
The City of Wilmington said crews will begin installing nine speed humps along Burnett Boulevard between Sunset Avenue and Virginia Avenue beginning Monday, May 18.
The project is expected to take about two weeks to complete. During construction, one block at a time will be fully closed to through traffic. Signs will be posted to alert drivers, and Carolina Beach Road will serve as the recommended detour route.
Work is scheduled to take place between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., but road closures will remain in place overnight during the work week.
The city said Burnett Boulevard will temporarily reopen for the Memorial Day holiday weekend from May 23 through May 25 before construction resumes.
Officials said the work is part of Wilmington’s Vision Zero initiative, a citywide effort aimed at eliminating traffic deaths and serious injuries while improving safety and mobility for all roadway users.
The city is also moving forward with traffic calming projects in several other areas, including Rogersville Road, Tanbridge Road between Eastwood and Wells roads, Charter Drive, Carl Street, Jeb Stuart Drive, and Wallington and Lancaster roads.
