“The storm really brought more back” Hurricane Florence victim gains identity back
NEW HANOVER COUNTY (WWAY)– Yesterday marked the first anniversary of Hurricane Florence.
One person who evacuated for the storm has been working towards a fresh start in life and credits Florence for the change.
Herman Dukes has a story many can learn from.
He repeatedly told WWAY news that he just believes God chose him to be an advocate for people in similar situations.
Dukes was in a shelter when Hurricane Florence destroyed his home on Gordon road.
He said he lost everything, and after months of living in shelters and motels, he wanted nothing more than to return home.
That wasn’t possible with the amount of damage his home endured.
Dukes told me he believed it was an angel who heard about his story, and bought him a tent.
He said he’d been living in that tent in front of his home when he noticed how scarce his resources became.
“The storm really brought more back. Sometimes it takes the storm to eliminate a lot of things in your life, and you get a chance for a fresh start,” Dukes said. “I’m just ready.”
Dukes also said he felt the storm gave him his identity back.
Cape Fear Volunteer Center is working on funding for the foundation of his home.
After that, we’re told they’ll look at making other repairs.
