The Community Empowerment Festival

The Community Empowerment Festival, providing support to grieving parents of murdered children, celebrated their existence Saturday.

The Justice for Citizens Group and the Leland Police Department joined together to create awareness and show support for the families of murdered children.

They also provided information about sexual assault, domestic violence and gang activity.

“We started this group as a support we felt that the people needed to be aware of what was happening and to advocate for the victims,” said Lou Smith, who lost her son in 1994. Her son Bryan was found dead in Town Creek on Mother’s Day.

“We’re family, when the families come together they know the pain that we each feel we’re just we’re one we understand each other,” Smith said.

If you would like to help the justice for citizens group continue to raise awareness around the community, you can go to their meetings at the Brunswick Community College the last Thursday of each month, with the exception of June, July and August.
