Third ferry being eyed for Southport/Fort Fisher route

WILMINGTON, NC (StarNews) — Within the next decade, the growing reliance on the Southport/Fort Fisher ferry for residents and tourists could get an assist from a third ferry boat.

Included in the N.C. Department of Transportation’s 2027 Strategic Transportation Investments Funds (STIP) is a $14 million line item to build a new river class ferry to join the current two-ferry passage between Fort Fisher and Southport.

Tim Hass, spokesman for the DOT’s Ferry Division, said the route was identified for another ferry due to consistent rise in passengers over the last few years.

“We continue to see growth on that route,” he said. “It is quickly becoming one of our more popular routes and we anticipate, at some point in the future, we will need to add capacity, which this ferry could handle.”
