Three charged in connection with fatal shooting of 14-year-old in Wilmington

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Three people are facing charges in connection with the fatal shooting of a 14-year-old boy in Wilmington earlier this month.

The Wilmington Police Department announced Thursday that Dorian Maurice McNeil, 24, and Sencere Maurice Ortiz, 22, are each charged with first-degree murder and robbery with a dangerous weapon.

McNeil was arrested Sept. 21, while Ortiz was arrested Sept. 23. Both are being held without bond, according to police.

A third person, Alexis Johnson, is charged with felony accessory after the fact. Police say a $150,000 bond was set during Johnson’s first court appearance.

The charges stem from a Sept. 8 shooting near South Fifth Avenue and Dawson Street.

Wilmington police said officers responded shortly after 8 p.m. after gunfire was heard in the area. Officers found a 14-year-old boy suffering from life-threatening injuries.

The teen was taken to the hospital, where he died from his injuries later that night despite life-saving efforts.

WPD says the homicide investigation remains active and open.
