Thursday night lights shine on more than big plays — They spotlight local singing talent

LELAND, NC (WWAY) — Week two of High School Football has arrived, but it’s not just big plays we were looking for, but also for the next big star.

The crowd was loud, the band was playing and cheerleaders kept the energy high Thursday night as fans cheered on their teams.

But amid the tackles, touchdowns and passes, another kind of talent was on display in the Cape Fear region: singing.

Several people took part in a friendly singing competition, tackling one of the more challenging songs for any vocalist: the national anthem.

The challenge mirrored an opportunity being offered by WWAY for aspiring singers. Participants can submit an audition video that is one minute or less for a chance to win a VIP affiliate pass.

The pass could provide an opportunity to audition in front of an executive producer from “American Idol.”

For Michaela Lawson, participating in the singing competition was about more than just having fun. She said the experience could help give her the confidence to pursue new opportunities.

“I will be so proud to do this, because this is a new year, and I am trying to put myself out there more,” Lawson said. “And it would be a great opportunity.”

The next big singing star may not be found under the Friday night lights. They could be right there in the crowd, waiting for their chance to take the stage.
