TOPSAIL BEACH, NC (WWAY) — The Town of Topsail Beach has named Timothy Flewwellin its new chief of police.

Flewwellin has served as interim chief of the Topsail Beach Police Department since Aug. 1 following the retirement of longtime Police Chief Sam Gervase.

He has more than 16 years of law enforcement experience in southeastern North Carolina.

Flewwellin’s career includes time with the Burgaw Police Department and Surf City Police Department before he joined the Topsail Beach Police Department in 2017.

While serving in Burgaw, Flewwellin worked as both a patrol sergeant and detective.

Since joining Topsail Beach, the town says Flewwellin has served in leadership roles involving patrol operations, officer development and community policing.

Flewwellin completed the Police Chief’s Institute through the North Carolina Justice Academy and attended the University of North Carolina School of Government’s Municipal and County Administration program.

He is also a certified law enforcement instructor, firearms instructor and FAA-certified remote pilot.

The town says Flewwellin will continue leading the department’s public safety and community policing efforts in his new role.
